What the AQI means

The AQI (Air Quality Index) is a single number for air quality: the higher it is, the more polluted the air. We use the US EPA scale, which runs from 0 to 500.

PM2.5 and PM10 are fine solid particles (under 2.5 and 10 microns) that reach deep into the respiratory system. In cities their main sources are traffic, construction and, in the cold season, heating; in winter, stagnant air in valleys makes pollution worse.

The index uses the NowCast method — a weighted average of recent hours that reacts quickly to changes. The city value is the median of its stations.

Frequently asked questions

What is the air quality in Tbilisi right now?
The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Tbilisi is 52 right now — Moderate. PM2.5: 10 µg/m³, PM10: 16 µg/m³. Data: real measurements from 5 station(s) of the National Environmental Agency (air.gov.ge).
What is PM2.5?
PM2.5 are solid particles finer than 2.5 microns. They penetrate the lungs and bloodstream, so they are considered the most important indicator. WHO guideline: daily mean no higher than 15 µg/m³.
Why does the AQI in my app differ from this page?
Services use different scales (US, EU, China) and different data sources (stations or models). This page uses the US EPA scale and real measurements from Georgian monitoring stations.
When is the air at its worst?
Generally, pollution is higher in cold, windless weather, especially in the morning and evening when traffic is heavy and air stagnates in the valley. The chart above shows the real-time situation.
